40 Car pile up on I70 in Kansas

BONNER SPRINGS, Kan. -- A burst of snow made traffic treacherous Sunday afternoon, causing a series of multi-car wrecks throughout the metro, wrecking more than 100 vehicles.

Kansas Highway Patrol officials closed westbound Interstate 70 at the K-7 Highway interchanged due to a multi-vehicle accident. As many as 40 vehicles were involved, including two Greyhound buses. Traffic was backed up as far as a mile and officials anticipated the roadway being closed for several hours. As of 5 p.m. westbound I-70 continued to be shut down and just one lane was open on eastbound I-70.

The University Of Kansas Hospital reported 15 people were transported to their hospital and five were admitted. None of those that were transported has serious injuries.

On northbound Interstate 35 at 87th Street in Lenexa, a multi-vehicle wreck shut down traffic. No serious injuries were reported. At least 20 vehicles were believed to be involved in the wreck.

Two sets of accidents on I-435 near the Kansas River slowed traffic and wrecked at least 40 vehicles.

Northbound 69 Highway was closed at 87th Street after five cars wrecked. Traffic was diverted onto 87th Street.

The Overland Park Police Department was so busy attending to accident Sunday, officers opened walk in accident reporting. Officers advised those vehicles involved in wrecks that have a drivable vehicle to drive to the Overland Park Police Department to report their accident.

Wow! We saw this on the news -- absolutely frightening! And those poor rescue workers...don't know where I'd start.
